Kate- As a WLS patent for two years now I am reminded that WLS a tool and we have to use that tool. Thanks for offering us other tools. We tend to rely on the WLS tool and forget or other tools.

Thanks for reminding us Kate to be grateful for the bounty of the Thanksgiving table; not what's ON it, but the love, family, and most importantly, good health that is sitting AT it.
A lovely, well written article.

Great read Kate. Thanks for sharing your tips. I had WLS 3 yrs ago this Jan 13th and have struggled as most WLS patients do with food. Even gaining back some. I generally have holiday meals at my house and this year is no exception. I find that if I adapt some of the holiday receipes to my diet needs that it makes it much easier for me to cope. Additionally, it gets everyone else eating healthier without even knowing it. I do things like substituting non-fat cream cheese for dip receipes and using Splenda instead of sugar for baking that calls for sugar. I cut down on fats and still keep the great tastes that you expect in a holiday meal. Stay clear of the breads and potatoes and stay within your portions and Holiday meals can be great.

Great read, Kate. I had my WLS two years ago a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving and these days, prefer to give thanks to the fact that I'm happier and healthier than I've ever been. Those first months post WLS are tough and some find themselves feeling isolated in their struggle. You point out some excellent ways to avoid or handle those times and still enjoy the happiness of the holidays. Thanks for your positive look at things.

Nice to see a positive WLS surgery post and nice of fitfare to recognize that WLS is another tool to becoming fit. I find that Thankgiving can be a very healthy meal if done correctly. Turkey is a great source of protien, eat your veggies, avoid the bread and potatoes and you have a healthy meal. Top it of with a low cal, sugar free dessert and you haven't missed a darn thing...except the post meal coma induced by over eatting. Thanks for the great article.

Kate - Great column.. As a WLS patient as well I had my surgery one week before Thanksgiving 3 years ago. I didn't dread it.. I welcomed it. I have never regretted this surgery or mourned the loss of food. Being fit and healthy is so much better then that extra helping of stuffing or pie! Great Job! Keep em coming.
