Avoiding the Evils of Office Parties
I like to write about healthy eating at work because I think it’s one of the top three places where people over-indulge. Granted, this is my opinion, but I’m going with it.
I work nights at a TV station and my co-workers often being in goodies for special occasions. And being that the holiday season is now upon us, more and more temptations are popping up all the time. So I decided (in order to save myself and all you lovely readers) to compile some tips from one of my favorite websites to help us all avoid unnecessary Christmas poundage!
First, never go to work hungry. It doesn’t matter what shift you work: If you’re just “starving” when you walk into the office, a jelly donut is going to look pretty darn good. But, if you’ve already had eggs, toast and a glass of orange juice, that donut will more likely make you cringe.
On a similar note, bring your own food. May it be something just for you, or something you can share with your co-workers, make an effort to bring something with you. Check out Good Housekeeping online for healthy holiday cookie recipes. When you bring your own food, you’re instantly setting a limit.
And even if you bring along a contribution to the office party, BACK AWAY FROM THE BUFFET. Office party buffets are a trap. Once you hunker down in front of one, it’s hard to get away. So, instead of standing around eating thoughtlessly, fill up a small plate and move on. Better yet, head to the dance floor, limbo pole, or any other embarrassing party activity and burn some calories while you’re at it.
Finally, watch those cocktails. The more you drink, the more likely you are to pound down turkey or Santa-shaped sugar cookies. Not to mention that certain holiday drinks, like eggnog, pack a huge calorie punch. So, stick to one or two glasses of champange (which is typically low-cal) and save yourself the calories and the embarressment of getting drunk in front of your boss.
I hope these tips help you cruise through the holidays! Remember, it’s a time to enjoy, but it can quickly turn intp a diet and fitness nightmare.
