Be Sweet to Your Lover’s Heart

Valentine’s Day is just a day away now. Can you believe it?

Now you might think that just because we are all about healthy living here at Fit Fare that we would oppose the exchanging of chocolates. Not so. Everything is okay in moderation. And furthermore dark chocolate is known to have positive health benefits. Dark chocolate is full of antioxidants, and has been shown to slow the aging process, decrease blood pressure and spawn happy babies from pregnant mommies. Read more about the health benefits here.

So it’s okay to give those chocolates on Feb. 14. But what kind?

Ethel’s Chocolate Lounge recently provided us with samples (read more about one group’s take here) of their love collection and our editor-in-chief Cate O’Malley asked if I could somehow work a review into Fit Fare (Did you say chocolate?!? Of course!). I was so excited to see that package in my mailbox and even more psyched to discover the satin-y, plush pink box with a brown ribbon. Very nice packaging, indeed.

What about the chocolates? The box comes with 19 chocolates (a mixture of white, dark and milk). All the pieces are these cute curvaceous creations with “I love you” written in different languages. Cute, and a little sexy, for sure. Of the three flavors, I found the white chocolate to have the most “wow!” factor. The dark chocolate has a hint of liquor and really fills your mouth with great flavor. I didn’t think the milk chocolate was that special. All of the chocolates had a pleasingly smooth ganache center and a contrasting hard exterior.
Would I buy Ethel’s Chocolates? Yes. But I would be more apt to purchase something like their dark chocolate collection, so that I was getting a variety in the style I want most (dark).

And if you are in the Chicago area, you could always check out one of the Ethel’s Chocolate Lounges. That would sure be a sweet treat.

[…] Oh me, oh my! Several months ago, we reviewed Ethel’s Chocolates here on Sugar Savvy, and also by me over on Fit Fare. The overall reaction here on Sugar Savvy was that they were good chocolates, but not exceptional enough to be called gourmet. In fact, several noted that they appeared to be mass produced. One tester even asked if they were from Target. Truth be told though, I liked them for the most part (the milk chocolate wasn’t special though). Well AOL City Guide voters apparently are ga-ga over them and recently named Ethel’s Chocolates the best in Chicago. I wonder if it’s the cool concept of Ethel’s chocolate lounges or the beautiful packaging that helped the good, but not great, chocolates take the title. Or perhaps their other chocolates - the non-Valentine’s Day themed ones - are tastier than the sexy little love bites. […]
