Think Outside the Box … for Your Breakfast
Breakfast has long been heralded as the most important meal of the day, and I’m certainly not going to dispute that fact - I agree! By starting your day with a healthy, nutritious meal, you are kicking your energy and metabolism into high gear, and setting yourself up to have the best day possible. But if you’re not a big fan of traditional breakfast foods, there’s still hope for you yet. Food TV chef Ellie Krieger, author of Small Changes, Big Results, suggests some non-traditional, but still good-for-you foods that just may get you thinking outside of the box.
- Turkey. Provides you with lean protein and important B6 vitamins. She suggests putting two pieces of sliced turkey breast inside a whole wheat pita with some lettuce.
- Sweet Potato. For a good dose of cell-protecting vitamins A and B, Krieger says to microwave it on high for about 5 minutes and then try topping with lowfat cottage cheese and a smattering of cinnamon.
- Salmon. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids (good for brain power!), mix 1/2 cup of salmon (packed in water) with 2 tablespoons of lowfat honey-mustard dressing. Spread the mixture on top of a whole-wheat English muffin and top with fresh tomato slices.
