6 Tips to Keep Fit While on Vacation

If you’re one of the almost 40 million Americans planning a vacation this summer, and exercising regularly is important to you, then consider these 6 tips to keep you fit while enjoying the sites.

1. Be a smart packer. Bring a couple of changes of workout clothes, appropriate footwear, swimwear, and sunscreen with you. You didn’t lug those sneakers halfway across the country just to plop them inside of the hotel closet, did you?

2. Stay at fit hotels. Web sites such as www.fithoteldirectory.com allow you to search for a hotel that meets your fitness needs. Before booking a room, inquire about the fitness facilities available and any associated costs. Some hotels offer fitness classes, personal training, and room service of workout equipment, for a fee. Also, ask about any discounts to local fitness centers that may be available.

3. Be low-key. Many fitness companies sell compact travel gyms that include small equipment such as exercise tubing, resistance bands, BOSU balls, exercise mats, and water weights. Or try an equipment-free workout such as this one either indoors or outdoors.

4. Hoof it. Join walking tours instead of bus or trolley tours when you reach your destination. Ask your concierge to suggest safe, well lit routes. When I travel, I like to take early morning walks; it’s less congested and gives me the opportunity to learn my way around the area. Also, walking to and from restaurants, museums, theatres, and other attractions will save you money and calories, while giving you time to delight in the local sites.

5. Live like the locals. Experiment with new fitness activities that are popular in your vacation destination. If you’re at the beach, then try snorkeling, surfing, or kayaking. If you’re land locked, then maybe hiking, biking, or rollerblading is for you. Trying something new gives you the opportunity to meet interesting people, have fun, and burn calories. In fact, an average 150 pound woman can burn up to 852 calories per hour rollerblading! So, what are you waiting for?

6. Be realistic. Don’t expect to maintain your regular workout schedule while you’re on vacation. Instead, find a balance that works for you. I usually schedule cardio and resistance training for a couple of days and leave other days for impromptu fitness activities such as a bike ride around a park or a long walk on the beach. That way, I feel good about myself and still savor my vacation time.
