Healthy Eating - A Refresher
In a recent issue of Martha Stewart’s magazine, Everyday Food, she gave 12 Building Blocks for Healthy Eating. Some are plain common sense, but whether you’ve heard them or practice them, we can all use a little refresher from time to time.
1. Use smaller plates for dinner - you’ll be surprised how effortlessly it helps you eat less.
2. Swap in energy-sustaining whole grains for simple carbohydrates.
3. Plate food in the kitchen to help everyone avoid taking seconds.
4. Choose full-flavored cheeses like Parmesan, and simply use less.
5. Reach for healthy tools like a grill pan, steamer and salad spinner.
6. One night a week, go vegetarian.
7. When possible, swap out light ingredients in place of full-fat ones.
8. Seek out lean meats and poultry.
9. Thicken salad dressings with honey or mustard; use less oil.
10. Freeze tempting sweets, like brownies, individually wrapped.
11. Keep fattening foods that trigger overeating out of the house.
12. Stock up on healthy snacks, such as fruit and nuts.

A refresher on ideas for substitutions are great, because we all have a tendency slip back into our bad habits. It does make things easier if you can make changes at the grocer store, so you won’t have the temptation at home.
