Thinking Outside the Candy Box

Last week I came across this wonderful website called Green Halloween. Started by a mom in the state of Washington, this new idea seeks to promote healthier alternatives for kids at Halloween. Sponsored by big names like Whole Foods, this little movement is in its inaugural year.

The website has tips for hosting a kids’ Halloween party, and several suggestions for “tricks and treasures.” Really, it hadn’t occurred to me to hand out non-candy treats, but some of the ideas are pretty good. I plan to take some of the suggestions to see if I can find some healthy treats or treasures (I really liked the sticker and temporary tattoo ideas) to hand out this Halloween. However, I must admit that the box of raisins may be taking it too far. I remember receiving a few of these depressing little so-called treats in my Halloween bucket as a child (those evil memories seem to stick). With so many options on the market, if you must hand out dried fruit, at least upgrade to those yummy little papaya pieces that almost mimic candy.

Glad to see this idea is picking up traction. There are plenty of non-candy alternatives that are still fun for kids - I love the tattoo idea. Last year, we gave out mini containers of Play-Doh and spider rings.
