Lisa, how very interesting! I'd no idea you could do decaffeination at home. Does it taste the same? I suppose I could just go and put the kettle on, and test it myself ...

I had to give up caffeine a few years back because of digestive issues. I don't like herbal infusions and I was so sad to have to give up my black teas. . . until I learned how to decaffeinate my own tea!

Steep the leaves for a minute (if using bags or broken leaves, 30 seconds should do it), then dump the water. Boil fresh water, pour over and steep for the usual amount of time, or just a little longer to extract full flavor (the caffeine comes out of the leaf first).

Oolongs, greens and pu-erhs stand up best to decaffeinating (pu-erh is like the coffee of tea - full-bodied and dark), and some black teas as well.

It's a whole new world!

Hi tammy - well done to you on giving up smoking! I'm sure that was a LOT harder than the coffee ...

Phil - thanks for visiting. Costa Rican Arabica (and a new packet, love the smell of newly opened coffee) - I'm almost jealous, but not enough to start again.

Coffee, as much as I'd like to think it wasn't essential, my mornings would probably be bleary-eyed for longer without it. Tea, good for you and all, is making a comeback for me too, so I totally see what you're saying here.

Except I won't be giving up, in fact, through bleary eyes, I will be opening a new pack of Costa Rican Arabica tomorrow morning. Good luck to you though Lucy!

I gave up smoking for the same reason, I was just to sick to smoke. Now, it's been almost a year and I feel great.
There is something satisfying about giving up a vice, no matter what it is.
Once you give something up you realize how much power your addictions have over you. It's nice to be free.
Good Luck :)
