Introducting Ask Ralph

Ralph Villers and his wife, Patti, are regular contributors to Fit Fare. Now, Ralph has agreed to answer reader questions about what it’s like to be in a wheelchair, how he maintains his health and more. See below for information on how to ask a question.

Did your eating habits change when you began to use the wheelchair, and what impact did it have on your weight and fit-ness?

A - My eating habits did not change when i started to use the wheelchair. The issues that put me in the ‘chair were with only my legs, and not internal. Although I could not move like I did prior to the ‘chair, I did not change my eating habits.

I don’t know about my weight, as I have not had my weight checked since then. As I cannot stand, I couldn’t get onto a doctors scale. I really need to be weighed on a floor scale where I could take my total weight, and subtract the weight of my wheelchair for a true weight. I don’t know of a place like that would allow me to access such a scale.

At any rate, I do feel that I have gained weight over the years, but it did not seem to happen right away. I think that any weight gain built up gradually.
