Three Ways to Eat Local in the Fall

In the summertime, the local eating is so, so easy. There are farmer’s markets and farms everywhere and at the ready. But come fall, the farms begin to dwindle with farmers tilling their land and readying it for winter. It becomes harder and harder to find fresh, local food (unless of course you are in a year-round growing environment or a major city).

If you are like me, and what to eat local but get lost in the ‘but how’s’ then here are a few tips to get you going.

  1. Pick it fresh! Here in the Northeast, fall is high-time for picking your own apples and pumpkins. And the possibilities for these fruits are endless. From sweet to savory, there is a wealth of different dishes you can make with apples and pumpkins.
  2. Store it! If your farm still has tomatoes, greens, herbs or vegetables, fall is a good time to store these items for winter. Try pickling, canning or even freezing. You can make soups, relishes, and more.
  3. Choose local markets! It might seem like the local Stop and Shop has everything, but if you are into eating local, then why not shop at locally-owned stores? They often will have locally sourced products too.
