Raiding the Larabar Cookie Jar

After trying three “pie-style” Larabars, out of shear coincidence, I moved onto the cookie side of dessert.
Really, I don’t know how I kept myself from trialling the Ginger Snap Larabar before the “pie” selections. With a passion for potent spices, I can easily say that ginger snaps are tops on my cookie list. […]

Have a Slice of Larabar

Recently, I picked up some Clif Nectar bars when a great sale hit.  I loved them, and felt better after eating an all fruit and nut snack than a typical wheat- and soy-based energy bar.  I had heard that Larabars were quite similar, so naturally I jumped at the chance to try out a few […]

New Superfood Smoothies

Just a few years ago, I knew little of hemp beyond knapsack-style clothing, but this little seed has been making huge strides recently. With an excellent balance of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, a “complete protein” profile, and an impressive spec sheet of trace minerals, these tiny seeds are gaining some serious attention in […]

Flaxseed Shows Promise in Cancer Treatment

Flaxseed has made appearances in many forms on my website. I like its nutritional profile, and the ease of adding it to smoothies and other “raw” recipes. When combined with water, ground flaxseed can also act as an egg substitute in baking. But beyond its versatility and Omega-3 benefits, it seems there may be one […]

Pistachios Boost Hearth Health

Not one, but two studies from researchers at Penn State reported on beneficial health findings for this simple little green nut (technically a seed) at the 2007 Experimental Biology meeting in Washington, D.C. It seems this nutritional powerhouse has the ability to tackle heart disease from two angles, cholesterol and blood pressure. In one […]

Prunes, an Unsung Osteoporosis Hero

When we think of strong bones, calcium and Vitamin D often come to mind. We seldom acknowledge the many other vitamins and minerals that play a crucial role in bone health. In fact, it seems scientists are still unraveling the many pieces of the osteoporosis puzzle, and as they do, new “superfoods” emerge.Take […]

Cookies and … Hemp Milk?

When I first read the announcement that “hemp milk” was hitting the market, I was curious, but apprehensive. It sounded like a bit of a stretch. Then, when I heard a second company was releasing their own “hemp milk,” I thought “come on, there isn’t room for two brands already, is there?”
Yet, as someone who […]

Milk Weight Loss Claims Shut Down

In a recent letter made public, the Federal Trade Commission asserted that U.S. dairy producers must discontinue all advertising and marketing activities that involve weight loss claims.  As reported by Reuters, the milk-related weight loss connection is not supported by enough scientific evidence.  More conclusive research must be completed before such dairy campaigns may resume.
The […]

Crunching Through Some Chili Nutterz

I must confess, my bar hopping days are neatly tucked away in my memories, and I now happily live a “health-nut” lifestyle. However, we all need some delicious bite-sized morsels to appease our starving dinner guests upon arrival; especially as the barbecue days of summer set in. My one unwavering rule when selecting […]

Juice (or Blend) Your Way to Five-a-Day

After my first experience with The Complete Idiot’s Guides, I had planned to avoid this publisher at all costs.  Yet, something intrigued me about The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Juicing by Ellen Brown.  At first, I passed this title by, assuming that the purchase of an expensive juicer would be necessary.  However, when I took […]
