November means Turkey Day, and this month’s Good Housekeeping puts a spin on the usual Thanksgiving recipe roundup by offering healthy spins on all the standards, as well as “traditional” and “twist” versions of each dish. Check out these recipes to make your holiday spread less heart-stopping:

Test Your Thanksgiving Nutrition Knowledge

Health.com has posted a fun (or scary, depending on your perspective) Thanksgiving dinner quiz in their Healthy Eating section.
Wondering what sides to indulge in and which to avoid? Or what dessert is closest to guilt-free? Go take the quiz!
I scored an abysmal 2 out of 6. On the upside, I was overestimating the number of […]

Creating Comfort Without Food

A couple weeks ago, I was watching the Food Network when Ellie Krieger started rattling off a list that caught my attention. I snatched my pocket notebook off the coffee table and started scrawling quickly in a throwback to my journalism days.
Then I remembered I have a TiVo, and I backed up the program to […]

Healthy Highlights from October’s “Good Housekeeping”

Fruits and vegetables can be fun for kids, and changing the menu at school and in the community can make significant difference in children’s health.
This month’s issue of Good Housekeeping featured an article about the successful Somerville, Mass., program to reduce childhood obesity. “Shape Up Somerville” is a far-reaching initiative that not only replaced junk […]

Getting Out From Under the Weather

Whether it’s the now drizzly, chilly weather or a common malaise, chicken soup can cure what ails you.
I often whip up a batch whenever my husband catches the rare cold. It’s one of his favorite meals in general, one he made himself probably once a week when he was a bachelor living in Seattle.
My husband, […]

Tomato, Tomate

Summer may be drawing to a close, but it’s not too late to grab a little bit of sun-ripened deliciousness off the vine.

My grandma’s garden overflowed with plum tomatoes in varying stages of ripeness when I left for the west coast near the end of August. My mom had so many globes and cherries that […]

Changing My Diet for the Better

My husband and I are seeing our families for the first time in about a year right now, and one comment we get right after each greeting goes something like, “Wow, you’ve really lost a lot of weight!”
The two of us devoted the last year to making serious changes in our eating habits in order […]

Eating on a Jet Plane

As I type this, I’m cruising thousands of feet over continental Europe, finally on my way home after a long stay abroad. Or at least almost home — we’re plunging straight from Europe into a series of whirlwind family visits that will take my husband and me through Pennsylvania, New Jersey, California, and Washington in […]

Sneaking in Some Beans

Beans and I have been friends for years. The likable legumes are firm yet yield readily to the teeth, releasing a creamy mess of comforting flavor. They can be spiced up, sweetened up, or tarted up however you like. They easily take a meal from skimpy to satisfying.
But when I learned about all the health […]

Colleen Fischer

I've been there: My wardrobe diminished as my waist outgrew a steadily growing proportion of my pants. My wallet felt its own hunger pangs from my emotional eating and misguided attempts at dieting. And my fridge -- oh my, what is THAT in the Tupperware? My life was disorganized, and I just didn't know how to fix my problems. I set out to learn about health, nutrition, and kitchen routines that would promote them. Two years of teaching and graduate school may have led me to pack on up to 35 extra pounds, but I now have found a better way of eating that's led to healthier weights for both me and my husband. I'm not an expert, but I'm enthusiastic learner with time in the dieting trenches. I write about my experiences and opinions on healthy eating and kitchen management at Pennies & Pounds.
